The “Wisdom of Solomon” is a world-renowned legend of literally Biblical proportions! And whether or not any of us ever attains such wisdom, the Bible tells us that we can ask for wisdom where we lack it…and that we can expect to receive it!

The attainment of godly wisdom is a lifelong process and, much like sanctification, it’s one that we’ll never complete until we meet the Giver of all wisdom! Until that day, we must recognize our need for daily wisdom—for ourselves, for our families, and for our nation.

How can we be intentional in this area? How can we develop godly wisdom?

  1. Seek God’s wisdom first
It’s easy to look to other sources first—ourselves, our trusted friends, even the Internet—for wisdom. But godly wisdom must be sought first from the Lord! He is able to accomplish more than anything we could ever imagine, and His counsel establishes the baseline against which we should measure all other counsel.
  2. Study God’s Word
As we spend time studying the Bible, we will gain understanding that we can put into daily practice. Then, as we experience God’s direction and faithfulness in our lives, we will grow in wisdom as He equips us to do His work. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
  3. Walk in faith
Luke 7:1-10 captures the story of a Roman Centurion who “amazed” Jesus with the faith that Jesus could heal his sick servant, a man near death. The Centurion had faith that, with a single word, Jesus could heal the sick man because of the authority He possessed. Jesus publicly commended the centurion for his faith, and healed his ailing servant! What a testimony of faith!
  4. Seek the counsel of others
The Lord has blessed me with a number of dear friends—including my precious wife—who are dedicated followers of Christ. Their faithful counsel has enabled me to accomplish much morethan I ever could have accomplished on my own. And as I’ve aged, I’ve grown even more aware of—and dependent on—their insights. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22). Amen!
  5. Practice humility
Fear of the Lord, experienced in our daily lives as humility, produces godly wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). This wisdom in turn fuels a greater desire for even more wisdom (James 3:13a)! When we revere, respect, and obey the Lord—when we practice humility—He will reward us with greater wisdom, and our lifestyle and relationships will reflect Him in a deeper way.
  6. Ask God for wisdom
“If any of you lacks wisdom,” says James 1:5, “He should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” Do you believe this? God is ready to generously pour wisdom into us if we simply humble ourselves before Him…and ask for it.

These six steps are guidelines that I seek to follow every day in the development of godly wisdom. When more of us do these things more often, we will grow in community and become healthy decision-makers who are able to have a positive impact on our communities and nations. Godly wisdom is the best preparation for our service to the desperate world we live in!
